SCIENCE A Musical Drama Words and music by IVO MOSLEY. SYNOPSIS: Breimann is in his eighties and in a wheelchair. He is terrified of dying. For his birthday, his sixty-year-old wife Marionetta gives him the chance to live again in a beautiful young body. She will accompany him, re-born as a beautiful young woman. Breimann’s son Paul is horrified. Breimann believes Paul's horror is just a mask for disappointment - that he will not be getting his hands on his father's money. Celia and Dean, the scientists in charge of the transfer operation, describe their cynical philosphy of life to Breimann's chief-of-security Sand in the song MONEY. Paul's Chinese American girlfriend Mei, brought up by hard-working parents, finds Paul's carefree attitude to life shallow and the wealth in his family offensive. Mei sings somewhat regretfully of her love for Paul in FALLING LEAVES. For Marionetta and Breimann in their new bodies, things turn out very differently to how they expect. Breimann only wants to conquer girls. He feels liberated from the things (and people) he once loved. Marionetta tracks Breimann down to a cabaret restaurant. There she is struck by the sight of an old man who reminds her of the old Breimann; transfixed, she sings to him FORGIVE ME. Breimann notices the beautiful Marionetta. Not recognizing her, he sings to her: A GIRL LIKE YOU. Realizing who she is, in the middle of the song he tails off, overcome by regret. Troubles mount. Intending to die soon, Breimann decides he will wreak vengeance on the scientists. Paul finds his father in the doctor's office: he has killed two of the doctors. In terrible pain Breimann sings VOICES: he is back in a sunlit field where his family, fleeing the build-up to war, has stopped to rest. Breimann shoots himself. Mei enters: she is reunited with Paul and the curtain comes down. SAMPLE MUSIC: ‘Forgive Me’ Premiered at The Bridewell Theatre, London, 2002.
